This is the most senior role for product squad delivery. Not everyone will want to progress to SE5, and even those who do may not want to go to SE6, and that's OK. There’s scope for you to grow by taking on TL or EM duties if you haven’t already or to specialise your technical skills. Promotion from this role to SE6 is not a given since SE6 is a very different type of role.

You are a specialist with expert-level knowledge of a functional area of Cleo, or a language, framework or piece of the tech stack we use to build Cleo. You consider how issues can be spotted and resolved by non-engineers and look to add tooling and processes to allow them to self-serve.
You collaborate across squads.
You unblock your squad and pillar before they know they’re blocked with design and architecture that anticipates product needs. You are a domain expert in your pillar or horizontal.
You know about tests and data gathering running across multiple squads and step in to help those squads, avoiding stepping on each other's toes. You promote advancing data gathering techniques and frameworks in the application to support this data gathering. You work with the product chapter to champion using these frameworks to make the best product decisions.
You review cross-squad work critically and ensure it’s appropriately broken down and prioritised, and well-understood by all involved squad.
You keep squads focussed, you bring squads together to collaborate, and you get involved in delegating chapter work.
You identify processes that are missing and bring people together to define the new processes that will plug the gap.
You are a delivery multiplier for your pillar, enabling delivery of complex features and initiatives across multiple squads.
You bring ideas for work that needs doing to senior stakeholders and work with them to build a case for why this work is important for the success of the business.
You use various means of communicating that help you articulate your message effectively to squads and senior stakeholders.
You have a good view of inter-squad dependencies and are able to facilitate conversations that identify ownership of delivery between squads.
You provide timely advice that gives squads ample time to consider cross-team working before the work has been committed to in-Term.
You utilise network of people ranging from less tenured engineers up to Leadership Team to gain insight and provide guidance that mitigate potential issues.
You advocate for sharing knowledge and best practices.
You identify opportunities to increase the Cleo engineering brand.
You have a thorough understanding of several squad domains, and how they contribute to overall business strategy.
You deliver through others by scoping, designing and leading implementation of multiple large epics across the entire term.
You work closely with everyone on your squad to do this, but also collaborate with your peers in other squads and the non-squad stakeholders for your epics as needed.
Progression from here does not always lead directly to SE5; other roles like TL or EM should be considered too.
You are involved in strategic organisational decisions and plans.
You proactively propose a strategy for engineering within their chapter, and know how to effectively get buy in and move this forward.
You proactively identify problems that challenge our scale or business direction. Effectively communicate these and support changes to adapt to these challenges.
You help squads and pillars define how they will lean on principles differently based on the work they are doing (e.g. by defining product area principles).
